Cannabis History

According to the National Institutes of Health, cannabis has been used therapeutically for at least 3,000 years. The origin of the cannabis plant can be traced to approximately 12,000 years ago in Central Asia’s the Altai Mountains.

From the beginning, the migration practices of many nomadic peoples have included cannabis for many purposes. The medicinal use of marijuana appears in records throughout Ancient Egypt, China, and Greece, as well as the Roman Empire. In the 19th century, medicinal cannabis was introduced to Europe.

It wasn’t until the mid-1960s that the chemical structure of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), marijuana’s primary psychoactive cannabinoid, was identified. In the decades since, cannabis research has expanded significantly, bringing about significant advancements in our understanding of the therapeutic and recreational consumption of marijuana.

At the same time, countries such as the U.S. have made pivotal changes to cannabis regulation, with widespread legalization efforts transforming its role in our society today.

Cannabis Strains

There are many different strains of cannabis, each one possessing a distinct genetic makeup. Due to differences in the chemical composition of individual strains, most consumers seek specific types suited to their desired experience or objectives.

Typically, cannabis strains are divided into three main categories:

  • Indica: Indica strains are often associated with physical sedation, making them ideal for evening or nighttime use. For medical marijuana patients, indica strains may be preferred for body-ache alleviation, reduced discomfort and tension, and decreased stress.
  • Sativa: Sativa strains are often associated with uplifting and energizing cerebral effects, which makes them popular for daytime and social use. Some people may choose sativa strains for increased energy, focus, and similar purposes.
  • Hybrid: Hybrid strains are derived from combinations of indica and sativa plants, providing the best of both worlds in terms of genetic profiles and outcomes. The qualities of a hybrid strain will depend entirely on its parent strains.

Cannabis Consumption Methods

With so many forms of cannabis to choose from, consumers are not limited to just one method of consumption. It is not unusual for consumers to incorporate more than one consumption method into their lifestyles in the interest of flexibility.

Smoking and vaping

Inhalation is, by far, the most popular cannabis consumption method. This method can be achieved by traditional smoking (joints and blunts) or vaping cannabis-infused oils. The results of smoking cannabis last between two and four hours, typically peaking around the 15 or 30-minute mark.

Smoking essentials depend on the specific method you prefer. For example, beginners might opt for pre-rolled joints (which do not require special equipment). In contrast, more experienced consumers may enjoy vaping cannabis concentrates using a specialized vaporizer device or dab rig.

Edibles

Edible cannabis, including food and beverage products, is another popular option. Because this consumption method involves liver metabolization, the high feelings associated with cannabis may take longer to set in – but could last for an extended period.

Topical

Topical cannabis application uses creams, lotions, salves, and other products that are applied directly to the skin. The cannabinoids and other active ingredients are processed through the skin into the bloodstream, serving its primary purpose: targeting and relieving body discomfort.

Tinctures

Sublingual is a category of products that you can administer underneath the tongue, where they can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Cannabis tinctures are frequently consumed sublingually. Regarding the onset of results, sublingual consumption is generally quicker than edibles but somewhat slower than smoking.

The Best Cannabis for Beginners

For anyone that wants to try cannabis for the first time, there isn’t necessarily just one “best” product or form. Instead, the most important thing is to start slowly in terms of potency and serving size. Due to new cannabis consumers being likely to have a lower tolerance level, their ideal serving will not be the same as that of a highly experienced consumer.

Choose a dispensary that is staffed with knowledgeable budtenders that provide guidance. An experienced employee can help you discern the differences between various cannabis strains, provide vital information about specific products and brands, and suggest options based on your personal goals and needs.

More Cannabis 101: Frequently-Asked Questions

Is cannabis legal?

Cannabis laws vary from state to state, so be sure to check the regulations where you live.

In Arizona (where our Phoenix dispensary is located), medical marijuana and recreational adult-use cannabis have been legalized.

How old do you have to be to consume cannabis?

In Arizona, medical marijuana is available to registered cardholders over 18. For individuals who are under 18, a legal guardian must register as an MMJ caregiver.

In addition, adults over 21 can legally purchase recreational cannabis from dispensaries in AZ without a medical card.

What is a “THC detox”?

A THC detox is the practice of flushing THC (the active compound in marijuana) out of your system.

There are various reasons for “detoxing,” such as:

  • The need to pass a drug test for employment purposes
  • The desire to take a short tolerance break from cannabis

Depending on an individual’s specific goals, many different ways to detox from marijuana exist. Generally, the most effective options are abstaining from cannabis for a set period, engaging in regular physical activity, and consuming plenty of nutritious foods and water.

How much cannabis can you buy at one time?

Again, cannabis regulations vary between states.

In Arizona, recreational marijuana consumers are permitted to possess/purchase up to 1 ounce of cannabis or 5 grams of cannabis concentrate at once.

MMJ patients in Arizona can possess/purchase up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis at a time, of which no more than 12.5 grams can be cannabis concentrates every two weeks.

Can you consume cannabis in public?

In Arizona, public consumption of cannabis is not allowed. This rule applies to both recreational and medical marijuana use. So, your best bet is to enjoy your preferred form of cannabis at a private residence.

Can you take cannabis out of state?

Because cannabis has not yet been legalized at the federal level, traveling across state lines with marijuana in your possession is not advised.
