Say high to Leafly’s Strain of the Year, Super Boof!

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other word would smell as sweet.” 

Shakespeare’s famous words ring true for the 2024 Leafly Strain of the Year Super Boof. No matter which name you call it, its captivating aromas and effects are sure to impress. 

A cross between Black Cherry Punch and Tropicana Cookies, Super Boof was originally created in 2019 by a foodie and working dad out of San Diego who goes by the name Blockhead. He dubbed the strain ‘Blockberry’ in homage to its berry sweet aromas and flavors. As a seed collector himself, Blockhead was keen to add these seeds to his seed bank for the future, not realizing that his creation would take the country by storm five years later.  

Through Blockhead’s network of seed breeders, Blockberry seeds were sent to Michigan breeder Mobilejay. Not anticipating anything crazy from the seeds, Mobilejay joked that it might end with him growing boof. 

• Boof: cannabis slang for low quality cannabis 

As it grew, Mobilejay would jokingly say “Look at Super Boof go!” and the name stuck with him picking his best Super Boof pheno (his pick was a sativa leaning pheno while Blockhead’s original Blockberry leans indica) to use as the mother plant for his clones. By 2022, clones from his Super Boof mom could be found from Oregon to Massachusetts with cultivators and smokers alike singing their praises for its ease of growing, high yields, and crowd-pleasing profile.  

• Pheno: A phenotype (pheno) is the physical traits of a cannabis plant, determined by its genetics and environment. When a female plant produces seeds, each seed is a unique phenotype, combining traits from both the mother and father plants. 

• Clone: Genetically identical copies of a mother cannabis plant. They are created by taking a cutting, or a small piece of the mother plant, and allowing it to root and grow into a new plant. 

While Blockhead does not love the name Super Boof, he is proud of what he created and how well it grows in almost any cultivation set up. In a recent interview with Leafly he made it clear that he is not about chasing the hype, he’s looking to help future growers be set up for success, “I just want to make superior crosses of every type so anybody can be successful.”
